Umah Ramah discusses Ester Pandiangan’s most recent book, “Seks Kita Memang Perlu Dibantu” (Our Sex Really Needs Help) on Friday, June 28, 2024, at Rumah Rengganis, Cirebon. The event led by Prasetyo Aditya did not only discuss a book, but also encouraged attendees to to view sexuality more openly and scientifically, moving away from a taboo idea.

In this event, Ester Pandiangan shared her struggle in writing the book “Seks Kita Memang Perlu Dibantu”. She highlighted how society frequently overlooks or misunderstands sex.

“It is time for us to convey a clear understanding that sex is not merely an intimate affair (sexual relations) that should be kept private, but a crucial topic that needs to be discussed openly and scientifically,” she said.

Ester went on to say that we should no longer undervalue the lovely and romantic role that sex plays in our lives.

The reviewers,  Asih Widyowati and Mahirotus Shofa, supported Kak Ester’s statement. Both highlight how society views sex, which is frequently characterized by ambiguity and stereotypes. They underlined the value of thorough sex education which should start early in the family.

“when we avoid having open and honest conversations about sex, we leave children in a state of confusion that can lead them to to seek out incorrect information from sources,” said Asih.

This is in line with Sofa’s assertion which added that such books like Ester’s are crucial in dispelling misconceptions and confusions about sexuality in society.

“The majority of people continue to mislead children’s perceptions about sex rather than offering an accurate explanation. For them, this actually causes confusion. Typically, adults simply tell kids, ‘Oh, you’ll understand it yourself when you grow up.’,” she said, using an example.

The discussion, which was attended by dozens of young people, did not end with the talks from the author and the reviewers but also included an open forum where participants may ask any questions. Enthusiastic and engaging conversation took place during the session. []
